Diet Sodas make you hungry! Let me tell you what happened to me…

This past week I was at work and I grabbed a soda out of the machine. BIG MISTAKE!!!!!
I used to drink 5 or 6 a day…and that was the around the time I gained 100 pounds. Diet Coke was my drug of choice. I was raised on sodas, they were called “drinks” in my house. It wasn’t unusual to have them with breakfast…seriously.
Well, since I got married, my husband has convinced me to give them up. Sometimes I will have one for whatever reason, but I ALWAYS regret it.

This day I was hungry but I had an hour and a half until I left work, and wanted something to help curb my appetite, so I grabbed a 20 oz diet mountain dew. It seemed to help at first, but then it hit me. Hunger like a crazy obsessive kind…
AND that wasn’t it. It continued once I got home and ate something. I became a munching freak…grabbing all kinds of stuff. It was honestly like there was a fire inside of me I was trying to put out and only high sugar, high calorie stuff would work.
I have been on this food plan since May 5th…and I have not experienced this type of hunger pangs since I began.
The day after this happened, someone posted about being hungry and I just asked them if they drank sodas…and they said they did…
hmmmm…so….it wasn’t just me. There is something to it.
I also noticed that the effects seemed to carry on into the next day…I seemed to become overly emotional…MUCH like I would get after a sugar binge…in my former days.
STAY AWAY from the SODAS…especially the diet ones…there is a connection…and they are NOT good for you!!
Here is some info I found on a quick search–hope it helps someone kick the soda habit!!!!

Of course “regular” sodas would not help you reach your weight loss goals, but certainly diet soda can be a useful tool in weight management, right? The word “Diet” is right there in the name, after all. Wrong! Researches at the University of Texas Health Science Center found that diet sodas put a person at a higher risk of becoming overweight. According to their research, “artificial sweeteners can interfere with the body’s natural ability to regulate calorie intake. This could mean people who consume artificially sweetened items are more likely to overindulge.”
#7 Reason to Quit Drinking Soda Pop: Artificial Sweetener Issues
Often the subject of urban legend, artificial sweeteners have been accused of everything from causing headaches to multiple sclerosis and even death. Most artificial sweeteners have over 20 years of research behind them, proving their safety for most individuals. However, consumption of artificial sweeteners may make some people crave more sweet things which will in turn create more cravings for people who are trying to avoid sweet foods for health reasons.

#9 Reason to Quit Drinking Soda Pop: Less Chance for Diabetes
#10 Reason to Quit Drinking Soda Pop: Soda Replaces Healthier Drinks
- When you drink diet soda you ingest a long list of potentially harmful chemicals and additives
- There is usually too much caffeine in diet soda
- Caffeine is a diuretic – so instead of the diet soda quenching thirst, it actually dehydrates you
- Diet soda usually contains sodium which makes you more thirsty
- Diet soda contains phosphoric acid which sucks calcium out of your body
- Diet soda causes your body to be more acidic so it screws up your pH balance. Cancer and other diseases tend to grow rapidly in an acidic environment – so you want your body to be more alkaline
- Diet soda harms your teeth – the acid in soda eats away tooth enamel
- Diet soda can cause irritation of your stomach lining
- Diet soda can be addictive and can give you severe withdrawal symptoms as you wean yourself off of it.
- Diet sodas can trigger a sweet tooth craving that leads you to binge on high calorie sugary treats. Then instead of losing weight you are gaining more.

Wow! I am a diet coke addict. But after reading this, I am going to stop. I will drink only water and my propel (after runs) from now on. That will be one of my goals this week. No diet soda!
I already quit drinking all soda’s…no none the less thanks for the info. Ill just save this for later in the memory bank, for the times that i do want a diet soda
Water is my best friend. Sometimes I’ll through in some Crystal Light to get some variety.
I know it is bad when after dinning out or being at a party and downing 2 or more diet colas you get that sick aspartame-y taste in your mouth….yuck….anything that makes that weird after-taste happen cannot be good for you…
I wonder if that applies to splenda too….cause I am a splenda freak…LOL
Great blog, girl!! Thank you for sharing all that important information with us!
Soda can be a dreadful addiction, but I guess it is possible to overcome huh. I’m still working on it.
Have a happy soda-free day!!
This is great information! I stopped drinking soda a month or so ago, and seemed to have lost weight. There was one week when I did go back to soda but when I realized how much I lost I stopped drinking it!

Only once at a restaurant did I drink diet mountain dew but never again…anyhow the diet mountain dew really makes me thirstier so I never really drink it.
Great INFO!!! Aspartame and all the phoshates! Yuck. People are killing themselves really and I thank you for sharing.
Love your beautiful butterflies by the way!
I am so excited to see that so many people have already quit!!!
Hope this is helping some people see the truth!
Yeah!
If just one person stops…then it is a GOOD thing!!!!
EXCELLENT BLOG Chrisie!!!! I’ve already copied and pasted this to Word and saved in my private puter drive. I don’t drink diet soda’s, but I’ve debated this topic with my sister a gazillion times and NOW I have some ammunition. HA!
Huggggggggggggggggggs,
Shan
I used to drink a ton of pepsi and mellow yellow. I stopped drinking regular pop completely, but have been letting myself have a diet pop about once a week just to keep myself sane. Maybe i will just cut it out all together. Thanks for the info
Awwwwww….I used to drink lots of pepsi too..and I switched to diet 7 up…I have also added water…I drink a case a week by myself. Sorry I just can’t give it up cause then I will head straight for the pepsi again. I used to use those powders that you mix with water for a replacement on the pepsi last time I tried losing weight…but, now I can’t drink them…just too sweet (no sugar kind). The dt 7 up (mine is also caffine free) is keeping me from using pepsi..so I have to stick with it for now…one pepsi..leads to 6 more. I guess for me…just gonna have to make do for now…but thanks for the info…
Now this scares me. I don’t drink alot of soda, but I do drink some. I also use splenda. Thanks for this info!

THAT’S IT, THAT’S IT, THAT’S IT!!!! You have inspired me to quit drinking soda all together! I know i am in for a ruff road, but after reading this! I have to quit! Thanks for helping me see the light!

It is so strange that you posted this but today I felt like I had to have a soda. I had been doing so well until now about drinking only tea and water.I was so happy that I kicked the habit because my family was like yours and soda was like water in our house.I noticed that whenever we ate anything with carbs, the craving for soda was stronger. After reading your blog, I regret having given in.
Wow! Thanks for such great info. I copied all the web sites to go back to when I get some time. I am off to work shortly.

I don’t drink much diet soda, a couple a week. I mostly drink water, crystal light and green tea.
HUGS
I phased this stuff out when I switched to a “healthy ” lifestyle…they just were not compatible. I backslide sometimes , and you’re right…it does trigger hunger.
Thanks for this!!! I don’t drink sodas much, but if I have one it will be a diet one. I am “IN LOVE” with Coke Zero. It was created to taste more like the real Coca Cola than Diet Coke. However, it is still “diet”. I never noticed this before, but maybe this is some of the reason why I am hungrier than usual sometimes. I am going to experiment. Thanks again

There was a whole program on one of those news shows like 20/20 echoing what you wrote. I guess I’m lucky because I never really liked sodas…my choice has always been sweet ice tea, now of course it’s tea with xylitol
From my understanding it’s any of the artifical sweetners in sodas to baked goods to whatever. I personally try not to eat any artifical sugar at all especially after hearing that. Thanks so much for the info
yeah it was on good morning america that your body actually after a while starts to process it like regular sugar ….with that said having a diet soda once a day is keeping me from having a regular soad which i love .
Great info, Chrisie! Hubby and i gave up soda a couple weeks ago. It was hard at first, but then you find yourself drinking more water and green tea and craving salty snacks less…
xo, mimi
I’m working on giving up the soda. I can’t do cold turkey, because of the headaches I get, but I will definitely wean myself off of it.
